Coming Here for Work or School
New Mexico State University
NMSU's main campus is on the south side of town. Neighborhoods near campus make for a very short commute, and most of the city is an easy drive away.
White Sands Missile Range
The range's main post is on the far side of the Organ Mountains, roughly 25 miles east of town on US 70 over San Augustin Pass. The East Mesa and Talavera sit on the side of town closest to the pass.
Spaceport America
Spaceport America is in the desert north of Las Cruces, roughly an hour's drive up I-25.
Fort Bliss and Holloman AFB
Fort Bliss is in El Paso, about 45 minutes south on I-10. Holloman Air Force Base is near Alamogordo, about 70 miles east past White Sands.
Getting Around
Two Interstates
I-10 and I-25 meet in Las Cruces. El Paso is about 45 minutes south, and Albuquerque is roughly three and a half hours north.
Flying In and Out
The nearest airport with regular commercial flights is El Paso International, about 45 minutes away.
Setting Up Your Household
Utilities
Inside its service area, City of Las Cruces Utilities provides natural gas, water, wastewater, and trash service, and El Paso Electric provides electricity. Outside city limits, services can differ, so confirm them for each property.
Driver's License and Vehicles
New Mexico gives new residents a limited time to switch to a New Mexico driver's license and register their vehicles. Check the MVD's website for the current deadlines and the documents to bring.
Schools
Most of the city is served by Las Cruces Public Schools, while communities in the southern part of the county fall under Gadsden Independent School District. Always confirm school assignment by address with the district before you buy.
